This is the most outstanding of the so-called Joseon karatsu hana-jin wares, with a clear separation of white and black ame glazes. The body is chamfered on six sides, with ears on either side of the tight neck, and the stepped mouth is tapered inward. The white straw ash glaze is thickly applied and mixed with the black ame glaze, showing a vivid contrast between the top and bottom, which is truly brilliant. The bottom of the bowl is flat because it was made by pounding, and it is lightly handled. It was made as a flower vase, but it is not clear whether it was made by the Kawauchi Kiln in Fuji or the Uchigaso Kiln in Takatori. It once belonged to the Konoike family in Osaka.
