This is one of the few complete black earthenware ear dishes. Fragments have been found at the site of Isawa Castle in Mizusawa City, and it is currently unknown outside of the Tohoku region. It belongs to the so-called “black earthenware B” category, in which carbon is adsorbed on the entire surface of the vessel. Needless to say, ear plates were used as chopstick rests in ancient times.
