Height 23.8 cm, mouth diameter 13.4 cm, bottom diameter 13.4 cm
This is a rare example of a simple cylindrical vessel with an ubakuchi-style mouth, but with an unrestrained linear pattern on the body and a mountain road pattern carved in lines around the mouth. It was clearly made as a flower vase, but is now used as a fine water jar with a red-painted lid. It is said that the use of red-painted lids on this type of pottery was started by Hara Soso Kakuyosai Soza, and this water jar is probably the original version of that style. The accompanying note to the flower vase reads, “This Bizen water jar in my possession is inscribed by Kakunatsusai, Yaekapu, cover red painting by Kakunatsusai, and is for the use of the owner. The inscription of “Yaekapu” is probably due to the uninhibited line carving pattern on the body. It would be more tasteful to use it as a fine water jar with a red-painted lid than as a flower vase. On the back of the lid of the box, there is an inscription by Hara Saso, “Bizen Sui-jigashi, Yae-kyozu, Kakusa (Hanasho)”. It was probably a famous item from the Fushin’an tradition.
