This Shigaraki tatemizu, which is said to have been Enshu’s favorite, has a unique shape with large ears on either side of the mouth and the mouth held inward, which is also an extension of Oribe’s taste. The fine-textured clay is used, and a shallow green ash glaze is applied to the exterior. The clay skin is a light red, but the color is refreshingly light, and is the kind of tatemizu that Enshu, who is known for his stylish style, would have liked.
It is estimated that it was probably made around the Kan’ei period. It is similar to the “Hana-Tachibana” bowl and seems to be a series of special order items. It is housed in a gift box with Enshu’s inscription “Mizukohoshi Shinjo Kobori Ennomori” on the front of the box lid. It is assumed that this was a gift from Enshu to Toshitsune, the second subtle head of the Kaga Maeda family.
