In the porcelain industry centering on Arita since the early Edo period up to the present day, early Imari Sometsuke (blue-and-white porcelain) has gained much in value in recent years.
Among these, many of the large bowls of this type have a high level of painted elegance, and are as attractive as Chinese underglaze blue and iron sand ware of the Yuan, Ming, and pre-middle Li Dynasty periods.
The shape of this type of large bowl is almost uniform, with the mouth open flat like a sword guard, and the base is quite small compared to the diameter, with a gently curved surface from the base to the mouth.
The painting on the entire surface of the circular shape shows a Chinese-style composition, while the pine trees on the left side suggest the brushwork of Yi Dynasty ceramic painting.
Although it is not clear what the model for this painting was, the composition and accuracy of the depiction far surpass those of later paintings.
The rim of the sword guard is decorated with a two-tiered wave pattern, and the inside is decorated with a Reishi tsunagi pattern.
The overall body is covered with a rather thick ash cake glaze, with fine penetrations, but the glaze within the stand is speckled, and the tatami-zukuri on the stand is guttural.
