This incense burner is in the shape of a roaring qilin looking up to the heavens, with the head as the lid and the body as the body. Although this is a small piece for an iroe carving, it is quite a powerful piece. The mane and body are painted with rust glaze, and the body is painted with red, blue, yellow, and black overglaze pigments. The black dots on the tortoiseshell motif are not the so-called two coats of black over green, which is common in this type of work, but a single coat of black. The body and lid are both covered with white glaze, but the inside of the lid is darkened to a brownish color due to smoke, suggesting that this is a piece from the Japanese period.
