The hozu design was a popular design used in the Okawachi domain kilns, and the most outstanding of these is the “Juji hozu” design on an octagonal seven-sun dish, but this shaku dish is also well organized.
The basic pattern of this dish is a chrysanthemum-shaped ring connecting the frames, and three types of treasure patterns are depicted relative to each other within the frames. The inner rim is decorated with blue ocean waves in red, and a pearl is placed between the frames. This is one of the best examples of Nabeshima large dishes in overglaze enamels. On the reverse side, a large peony flower is arranged on all four sides and connected by leaf arabesques, creating an all-around arabesque design, and the base is covered with a cloisonne pattern.
