Short-necked jars with animal feet like this one were fired in kilns in various regions during the 8th and 9th centuries. The ancestor of this type of jar was a Tang Sancai jar with beast’s feet, and a similar type with a neck and mouth that turned outward was fired at the Doyu kiln. This piece was excavated from a warehouse bone ware, and its strong shoulders match the large, stomping feet of the beast, giving it a powerful appearance. The strong shoulder tension matches the large, stomping feet of the animal, which are full of strength.
