The shape of this dish is almost the same as that of the large dish with landscape design in overglaze enamels, and the arrangement of the design is also almost the same.
The design on the front depicts two long-tailed birds perched on a camellia tree with branches spreading out on either side, and is expressed in the strong colors characteristic of the Ko-Kutani style.
The eighteen roundels are surrounded by a design of blue sea waves, gauze, oblique lines, and twisted flowers in underglaze blue, and twisted flowers, pine trees, flowers and grasses, basho (Japanese banana), and a “ma-michi” (a road between two paths) design in underglaze blue. The reverse side is the same as that of the large dish with landscape design in overglaze enamels, and it is needless to say that they were made at the same time.
