This type of vase appeared in the latter half of the 6th century and continued to be used until the 11th century, with the flattening of the body increasing from around the end of the 8th century and the addition of a base and a handle on the upper surface. The purpose of the flat bottles is not known, but since a small number of flat bottles were found among a large number of bowls, plates, and other tableware at the Heijo Palace site, they may have been used as drinking vessels. Small flat bottles were used as water droplets for writing brushes and inkstones. This is one of the finest examples of white, fine-textured ware of high firing quality.
