Kenzan: set of square dishes with ivy design, enamelled ware

Kenzan: set of square dishes with ivy design, enamelled ware

Height 1.8 cm, mouth diameter 19.0 x 19.0 cm, round bottom
This is a flat dish with a flattened square shape, and is commonly called a kaname (plane-grained) dish, because it has marks on the front edge that look as if they had been scraped off with a hatchet. They are usually arranged in sets of five or ten, and there are also long plates as well as flattened plates.
The most outstanding of these plates is the one with the most outstanding pictorial design. It is fired with a transparent glaze over a white ground, and shows an ivy pattern on the prospective side, while other patterns such as wild chrysanthemum, bush clover, ball chrysanthemum, and wisteria are painted on the reverse side. The box in which it is housed is inscribed “Kensan Ranre ‘E’ Kaku Dish”.
