This flat lid with a chrysanthemum string attached to the center of the gently sloping ko-mori lid is covered with a slightly yellowish white glaze from the front of the lid to the outside, and is vividly decorated with an arabesque design featuring large peony blossoms, with gold leaf applied to the interior.
The interior is covered with gold leaf. The somewhat rough surface of this piece has been speculated to be the work of Ribei, the founder of Takamatsu ware, but so far it has not been determined.
However, the peony flower design is similar to that of Nikiyoe, so it is thought to be an early Edo period Kyo-yaki ware. The technique of applying gold paint all over the interior is also often seen in so-called “Koshimizu” covered wares. The bottom is clay.
