In the early Edo period, many craft works were designed with the Unsun Utaruta motif. This incense container is one of them. The cover of this long incense container is clearly framed in blue overglaze enamels, within which a dragon design is painted in red and green, and the sides are covered with a tortoiseshell design. The base of the glaze is softly fired and the bottom of the bowl has an earthy appearance. The lid of the inner box is marked “Seikanchi-yaki incense container,” which may be an early Seikanji ware.
