This tea bowl is also by Ninsho, like the “Katamani” bowl.
One thing you may notice about this tea bowl is the clear traces of intentional dripping of glaze. In my opinion, the glaze would be better omitted. Wouldn’t it be more characteristic of Ninsho if the scales were finished more neatly?
The idea of incorporating the motif of scales on waves is good, but the scales are too technical, while the waves are merely hinted at, which may create a sense of disharmony.
This imbalance likely stems from the contrast between the technique aimed at appearing unskilled and the technique aimed at showcasing skill itself.
Nevertheless, it is a fine tea bowl. Considering that it was created during the mid-Edo period, it holds a profound depth of flavor.
