This is an early example of a two-tiered composition, in which the joint between the neck of the mouth and the shoulder is no longer made by placing a plate between the neck and the shoulder. It is made of gray, dense clay, wheel-thrown, and elaborately thin. It was fired by reduction firing and has a dark green ash glaze on the shoulders. The Kurozasa No. 7 kiln was excavated in August 1974 and dated to 780 ± 25 years by thermal residual magnetic orientation measurements, making it a late 8th century Sarutake kiln. Most of the long-necked vases from this kiln were three-tiered, and two-tiered vases such as this one were probably made toward the end of the 8th century.
