Excavated from Sanage Kiln, Aichi Pref.
10th century
Height 23.3 cm, mouth diameter 8.4 cm, body diameter 16.0 cm, bottom diameter 11.0 cm
This is one of the few complete large handled vases. It is thought to have been made in the late 11th century, as the shoulders have lost their tension and the body has lost its fullness. It is made of high-quality white clay, and the ash glaze applied to the shoulders flows down to the lower half of the body, giving a change to the monotonous appearance of this vessel. This is probably a late period ash glaze ware from the eastern part of the Sanage kiln.
