The ancestral form of the four-footed jar is found in Chinese celadon, but all Chinese wares are small in size. The large size of most of the examples copied in Japan is characteristic of our country, and the two or three horizontal bands are also characteristic of ours, and are not found on early examples. This piece has a spherical body and is of a slightly later date, with only two horizontal bands on the shoulder and body. It has a dense grayish-white base, and the ash glaze has been roughly applied to the surface with a brush. Judging from the clay, it is thought to have been made by the Tono kiln. It was probably used as a kurakotsuki (bone ware).
