The Ichimonji Manen-o incense container derives its name from its circular form and the horizontal cut running through it. On the lid surface, a single Manen-o plant is painted with iron glaze in a bold, brushstroke-like manner reminiscent of ink wash painting, forming a well-balanced composition within the circular space.
The glaze, predominantly Shino glaze, reveals a reddish fire change across the sides and entire base, distinctly showcasing this piece’s characteristic beauty.
As is true of yellow Seto incense boxes, Japanese incense boxes, unlike those imported from China, were born specifically as tea ceremony utensils. Consequently, they all exhibit a sense of refinement.
The author has seen several similar incense containers, each featuring different patterns—flowers, butterflies, or other pleasing designs. Originating from the Hirase family, it later passed through the hands of several tea connoisseurs in the Kansai region.
