In the incense container rankings, it is listed as a “Kiku Kabuto” (Chrysanthemum Helmet). The author has seen several examples, each with slightly different shapes.
It is entirely covered in blue glaze, with white lines revealing the ridges like those on a helmet’s bowl. This is likely why it was given this name.
Among Oribe incense containers, tea masters prize this as an antique. Such containers are rare; only later imitations of this form are commonly seen. A similar type is the “Bundo Kiku” (Weight Chrysanthemum), listed in the ranking as “Aoi Bundo” (Blue Weight), featuring a blue glaze and sometimes bearing chrysanthemum motifs.
This incense container, too, was kept in a certain family in its place of origin, Owari Province, treasured as an heirloom since ancient times and never shown outside the family.
Among Oribe ware, and indeed among other wares, this blue-glazed piece is extremely rare. Connoisseurs rejoice greatly, recognizing it as the product of an ancient kiln.
