This was originally made as a small bowl, not as a serving dish, and certainly not as a tea bowl. Although it has a tsubo-gata shape, the original form of tsubo-gata is found in tableware.
The glaze is applied in a way that suggests it was intended for use as tableware.
As in the case of the previously mentioned “Kuro Oribe, inscribed with Matsukaze,” the glaze on the inside is scraped away in the first glaze layer. The reason for this design remains unclear.
“Kuro Oribe, Meimatsu-kaze” was a very drinkable tea bowl, but this one may be less so. The rim is twisted outward, which might make it unexpectedly difficult to drink from.
The box inscription reads “Kūchū,” suggesting it was made for someone who appreciated that style.
The piece is definitely from the Momoyama period.
