The author had the opportunity to examine this renowned tea bowl closely during an auction held by the famous Fujita family, but has never had the privilege of drinking tea from it. It is one of the tea bowls I deeply hope to experience someday.
This is because this tea bowl is a quintessential example of the Oribe style. It embodies all the sensibilities and techniques of Oribe in its design.
The twisted rim, the skillful application of glaze, the simple sketchwork, and the technique of making the bottom of the cylindrical tea bowl bulge—all these techniques are poured into this tea bowl, fully showcasing the characteristics of Oribe.
At first, when the author saw this tea bowl, the intricate techniques caught the eye, and at times, they felt jarring and even unpleasant. However, after viewing this tea bowl multiple times, the author gradually came to appreciate the underlying aesthetic preferences of Oribe that lie beneath the surface of the techniques.
