Height: 3.6 cm, Mouth Diameter: 6.1 cm, Round Bottom
Raku Museum
This is a wide-mouthed teapot. Although hand-formed, it is crafted so skillfully that it appears as if it were wheel-thrown, truly evoking the masterful touch of Dōin. The entire piece is thin-walled; the rim is shaped as if twisted back, the body is distinctly round and full, and the bottom is rounded. The base is left unglazed to reveal the clay, while the interior is coated with white glaze. The rim and exterior are finished in red Raku glaze, and a white clay Aoi crest is applied to the front. This is a classic example of the so-called “sand glaze” style, and the Raku mark is clearly stamped below the waist. It comes without a box inscription and is housed in a tea-colored Kinran pouch (with an Aoi crest woven into the fabric). It was likely created as a tribute to the Kishu Tokugawa family.
