Height: 8.3 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.4 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.8 cm
This semi-cylindrical tea bowl features a slightly inward-curving rim and a flared body; part of the body has been flattened and carved diagonally with a chisel. The flat bottom is fitted with a small foot ring, which is unusual for Sōnyū; the interior of the foot ring has been carved out to create a flat, single-layer foot ring with a stepped edge. The black glaze, applied leaving the foot ring and part of the side of the foot ring exposed, has fired to a rough, skin-like texture. Unusually for a Sōnyū work, red glaze appears on part of the rim, and glaze has also adhered to the stepped edge of the foot ring. Three kiln marks remain on the foot, and a single kiln flaw runs from the foot to the body. On the underside of the box lid, Jushinsai has inscribed: “Sōnyū Black Tea Bowl, Flute Left (Seal).”
