This is a semi-cylindrical tea bowl with a rounded, flared body. It features Sōnyū’s characteristic low, flat footring; the rim is wide, and the interior of the footring is carved shallowly and compactly. The all-over black glaze has a rough, skin-like texture, and unevenness is visible in the glaze application. Three fine kiln marks remain on the flat footring. On the underside of the box lid is an inscription by Fuzan Seikō reading: “Sōnyū-made Black Tea Bowl, Yama (seal).”
