This is a well-balanced cylindrical tea bowl with a slightly curved rim, a tapered body, and a pronounced waist. The footring has a flat base, and because the indentation inside the footring is small, it results in a wide footring; the tea pool is clearly carved out on the interior. Large and small jewel motifs are carved on the exterior and accented with gold paint; since Jushinsai favored jewel motifs, it is said that this design originated with Chōnyū. The black glaze applied to the entire piece has melted well, resulting in a skin-like finish. On the lid’s exterior, Chōnyū inscribed “Jade-motif Black Cylindrical Tea Bowl, Raku ‘Kichizaemon’,” while on the lid’s interior, Jushinsai wrote “Fukurokuju, signed with the left-hand seal.” Based on this box inscription, the piece is believed to have been created during Jushinsai’s lifetime—specifically, between the time he assumed the name Kichizaemon and his 38th year.
