Chōnyu: tea bowl, known as “Tama”, Black Raku

Height: 10.2 cm, Mouth Diameter: 9.0 cm, Foot Diameter: 5.0 cm
Like the black-painted tea bowl inscribed “Fukurokuju,” this is a cylindrical tea bowl, but its construction differs slightly: it is formed with a thicker overall body, the rim has pronounced undulations, and the body is rounded at the waist. The foot is a low, rounded base; a kabuto-kin (helmet cloth) motif is carved into the interior of the foot, and a large tea pool is formed in the interior. Five marks are arranged along one side of the rim on the exterior, and five more are arranged along the lower rim on the other side, imitating the design of a Kyogen-style hakama. The glaze applied to the entire piece is thick and well-fused, with a vivid vermilion glaze appearing across the entire exterior. On the underside of the lid, Matagen-sai Ittō has inscribed “Kichizaemon-yaki Tsutsu Chawan Tama (signature),” and on the top of the lid, the authentication mark of the 10th-generation Dan-nyū has been added.
