This is a flat tea bowl with a strongly flared body, featuring distinct traces of basket-weave carving on the surface. It has a wide, flat footring with a stepped base, and the area around the footring reveals the white clay. Both the interior and exterior are coated with yellow clay and covered with a transparent glaze; however, the deep fire-change marks, vivid red hues, and flowing transparent glaze visible on the exterior create a beautiful visual effect. The Hachiraku seal is stamped beside the foot, and a signature seal is carved into the clay. Inside the shallowly carved foot, a square seal known as the “real name seal” is stamped.
As Seisai wrote on the inside of the box lid, “Inscription: Daikai, Left (signature seal),” this is a powerful and expansive tea bowl.
