　This vase is a good example of the oldest form of the noble Buddhist vase, which is a major representative vase form of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The flat, small body, large open head, and low, taut pedestal are all in keeping with the pursuit of beauty in form rather than in design. The smooth ash glaze coloring, combined with the beauty of the form, creates a new formal beauty that could be called the Muromachi style.
