Among the small jars of the Old Tokoname period are wide-mouthed vessels with almost no neck, such as this one. This type of jar was not found in the early period, and seems to have appeared in the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The purpose for which it was used is unknown.
It is made of coarse clay with high iron content and blown feldspar, and is well burnished, giving it a blackish brown color. Part of the shoulder is covered with a dark green natural glaze.
