Seicho-ji Temple
This jar was excavated as a sutra casing outer container from the sutra mound atop the Asahinomori forest near Kiyosumi-ji Temple, which is associated with Nichiren Shonin, and a piece of the crushed gilt bronze sutra casing bears an inscription dated Oei 3. The jar has a rounded, bulging body with a small neck and a 7 mm wide chamfer on the upper edge of the mouth rim. The body is molded in a three-tiered corded clay with a brush-worked surface. The surface of the vessel is brush-worked. The firing was good, with dark green natural glaze running down the brownish-brown vessel surface. This is an important reference material for early Muromachi period vases.
