Sutra mounds are used to bury sutras in two types of burial methods: transcribed scriptures in a sutra case, and tiled sutras. This tile sutra is one of those excavated from the famous Komachi Mound, and bears an inscription dated to the 4th year of the Jouan era. The priest Saikan, who is mentioned in the prayer, was a monk at Mangaku-ji Temple in Irago, Atsumi-gun, and when considered with the other tiled sutra, it is known that he built the sutra mound using this shirashi tile on which he had copied the Myoho-renge-kyo Sutra during the time of the late Shakyamuni period.
