Six old kiln sites are located in Echizen Town and Miyazaki Village, Niu County, Fukui Prefecture: Sobara and Masuya old kiln sites, Kumagaya old kiln site, Kogumagaya old kiln site, Byodo Ogama Yashiki old kiln site, Yakiyama old kiln site, and Oda Yamanaka old kiln site. The main artifacts are jars, pots, bowls, and rope legs, but a jar inscribed in 1306 has been discovered and is a strong source of chronological data. All of the old kilns from the Kamakura period were anagama kilns built on the slope of a hill, and while some of the early pieces are difficult to distinguish from Ko-Joname, those from the Muromachi period are easy to distinguish because of their distinctive characteristics. Both jars and pots have many unique inscriptions and seals, which are considered to be one of the characteristics of these kilns. It is one of the six oldest kilns in Japan, and from the Muromachi period to the Edo period, many oteakuro jars were produced. There are Echizen Sue ware kiln sites on the opposite bank of the Tenno River, which flows through the Echizen kiln area. 35 Sue ware kiln sites are found in the Nanketsu kiln group, 55 in the Niu kiln group, and about 100 in the Echizen kiln group.
