Katade (hard handled)

A Korean-style tea bowl that is tightly fired and whose clay, glaze, etc. appear to be hard. There are several types of katade, including honte, shirote, suna katade, enshu katade, gohon katade, nagasaki katade, osaka katade, gozo katade, e katade, hanshi katade, ame leak katade, kinhai katade, and katade mishima. Kote” or simply “kote” are purple clay with a glossy, moist glaze. The glaze is a light asagi color with a slight grayish tinge and a white tinge. The glaze has small cracks and the base shows no clay. The more elegant the piece is, the whiter the glaze becomes. The lower the quality, the whiter the glaze becomes and the fewer the small cracks.
