Also sometimes called sumitei. It refers to the black color of the kiln. The Gekko Yoron (An Essay on Ancient Art) says, “Its black color is like lacquer,” and the Ch’ing Hi-zang (The Treasures of the Ch’ing Dynasty) says, “It is not very rare,” but in the “Illustrated Catalogue of Famous Porcelains of All Eras” by Huang Bok Lin, “Only one piece is known. Today, “Kurojo-style” wares are considered to be those with a “kurojo-style” body of tusk-white color and sharp, thin texture, covered with a shiny black-brown glaze. Some vessels are rarely covered with gold overglaze, and are called Kurodajo kinsai.
