This refers to pottery formed by sprinkling baking sand on the potter’s wheel and firing on the sand. Shigaraki ware and other large wares are generally made in this manner. Old Shigaraki ware does not use this method, but is formed by sprinkling wood ash. The same is true of Tanba. Handmade jars and pots in Tokoname are made by shaking sand and molding on it. In the Tokoname area, this is called “sand bottom.
