Rokurome (Wheel-thrown mark)

marusankakusikaku

A mark made on the surface of a potter’s wheel by the rotation of the wheel during the wheel throwing process. This is one of the features of a tea container. There are two types of wheel marks: finger marks and marks made by a potter’s wheel. The Nengan-te tea caddy is an example of the latter. The direction of the wheel is the same as that of itokiri, and it depends on the direction of rotation of the potter’s wheel. This may be due to the fact that the Seto lineage uses a hand wheel, which is unique to Japan, while the Satsuma lineage uses a kick wheel, which was introduced from Korea.
