This jar, with a slightly slender, upright mouth and neck with a rounded tip and a nearly spherical body, dates to the early Momoyama period. The blackish-brown surface of the earthenware is coated with iron glaze applied with a brush, and over this the candy-colored natural glaze runs down to the lower half of the body. It was around this time that Echizen began applying iron glaze to vases.
