The most commonly known sutra tube outer vessels of Suzu ware are cylindrical vessels with a bowl as a lid or a small jar converted into a mortar as a lid, but carefully crafted vessels such as this one are rare. The knob attached to the lid is a flat triangular plate with a four-tiered molding on both sides and a carved Buddha image carved on both sides of the center, which is extremely rare. The body is made of rolled-up clay and has a mouth and neck for a lid. The body is made of rolled-up cord clay and has a lid-holding mouth and neck. The body is covered with a four-tiered comb-shaped wavy pattern.
