This is an extremely well-fired suribachi (mortar and bowl) for Kameyama ware, with a blackish-brown finish. It is molded with rolled-up clay, and the interior and exterior surfaces have been adjusted with horizontal nadirs. A portion of the mouth rim is bent to form a wide, one-sided mouth. The edge of the mouth rim is thickened to form a slightly wide rim band, which is thought to date from the middle of the Kamakura period (1185-1333). The bottom of the bowl has an itokiri bottom. The bottom of the interior has been polished considerably, and there are significant signs of use.
