The appearance of this vessel is similar to that of a wide-mouthed kettle, which is also an odd shape, but there are two or three similar examples. The clay skin is soft and tight, and the kiln changes are probably fresh. The ears on either side of the shoulder are interesting, probably in the shape of a tozan (distant mountain). Kiln marks in the style of pine needles are carved in spatula. It is probably made in the late Muromachi to early Momoyama period.
