Nanban imogashira mizusashi (water jar) were highly prized in the world of wabicha (tea ceremony) after the Muromachi period (1336-1573), and this Shigaraki reproduction of such a style is a zanguri, tegafu style water jar. The body is clearly spatula-shaped, and the mouth rim is thinly ground down to a flat surface. The inside is richly coated with a rabbit-spotted glaze, but the outside is burnished reddish black, leaving the bare skin intact. The inscription “KUSAKA” is carved on a large nail in the center of the flat bottom. This is one of the most wabi-style Shigaraki ware, and was once a favorite of Lord Matsudaira Fumai.
