From the latter half of the 6th century to the beginning of the 7th century, the neck of the mouth became significantly thinner, and the mouth rim changed to a large trumpet-shaped opening. The ability to grind such a thin cylindrical form is probably indicative of the improvement in potter’s wheel technology. The base is whiter and the firing temperature is higher. The small holes on the body are beginning to protrude slightly, but this is a characteristic of eastern Japan only.
