In Japan, bowls with black flowers on a white glaze that were fired in the Cizhou kilns of China in ancient times are called “E-Koryo” (painted Koryo), but in fact they were not made in Korea but in China. This bowl also closely follows the style of the Cizhou kilns, with peony patterns in iron glaze on a white slip-coated base, and needle-drawing, then a transparent glaze is applied and fired. The inside of the bowl is scraped off in a snakelike pattern, and the shallow, flat shape is also a good copy of the original.
The lid of the box is inscribed “E-Koryo, tea utensils, Do-hachi” and bears the seal of Niami.
