Okuda Eikou was particularly skilled at copying the red-painted ware of the Kezhou kiln, but he also left behind a number of elegant tea bowls in the Japanese style, which were more refined than the original. Windows are placed on all four sides of the body, and alternating Chinese floral and phoenix designs are displayed within them, with the characters “Fuki Chomei” (wealth, prosperity, and longevity) arranged within circular designs in between. The background is a red ground with arabesque-style patterns rendered in gold paint, while the phoenixes are drawn in a free-spirited manner in the style of the Gozu-style red painting. The design of the lion holding a ball is expressed in underglaze blue in the center of the interior, and the design of the lotus flower is also often seen in the red painting of Wuzhou. The foot ring is made of sand, in the style of the Wuzhou red-painted ceramics, and the inside of the foot ring is carved in the style of the Wuzhou red-painted ceramics, giving a good impression of the original. The seal “Riverbank Tributary” is stamped on the inside of the foot ring.
