This is a copy of the Shouni mikan water jar, and along with the water jar in Figure 164, it is the most outstanding of the Shouni copies. It is said that the conservation of this piece involved a great deal of research into the colors of the underglaze blue, and the excellent coloring of the underglaze blue on this water jar is a testament to this. The body is decorated with a combination of a variety of Shourui patterns, including three long-tailed birds in motion among pine, bamboo and plum trees on one side, and a twisted pattern on the other, with the space filled with round patterns. The round patterns that run around the base of the body each depict a landscape, and all of the patterns seen in Shourui are depicted. The lid’s strap is shaped like a branch of a mandarin orange, and on the lid itself, a sparrow is drawn on a bamboo branch centered on the knob. The thickly carved foot ring and the underside of the lid are both openwork, and on the inside of the foot ring is a blue-and-white inscription reading “Dai Nippon Eiraku Zou”, and on the underside of the lid is an “Kawahin Shiryū” seal.
