Sue ware with bird motifs has been produced since the 5th century, but so-called “bird-shobuttaubuttaubuttaubuttaubuttaubutsu jars with bird-shaped lids have been found only in the Tokai region, including Aichi, Gifu, Mie, and Shizuoka prefectures. All of them depict waterfowl, and some are attached to the shoulder of the jar as well as to the lid strap. The bird made for the lid string is a poor representation, but its wings are spread high and it looks as if it is about to take flight. It is a truly lovely work.
