The inscription “Oto-goze” likely refers to its voluptuous form, but the swollen appearance around the foot ring is particularly reminiscent of Oto-goze.
The overall shape is round and somewhat thin, with a mountain-like rim, and the plump, gentle form clearly shows the characteristics of Kōetsu.
There are characteristic cracks around the foot ring and vertical lines. The unique, flattened footring, which appears sunken and reminiscent of a go board, further enhances the Kōetsu-style feel. The rim is round and wide, with a generous interior.
The bead glaze is well melted, giving a lustrous sheen, and the distinctive white hue is enhanced by the deep, striking Kōetsu red, reminiscent of ripe persimmons.
This piece beautifully exemplifies Kōetsu’s soft and rich style.
