Excavated from Sanage Kiln, Aichi Pref.
9th century
Height 14.5 cm, mouth diameter 9.2 cm, body diameter 18.6 cm, bottom diameter 11.3 cm
This rather small short-necked jar is undoubtedly from the Sanage kiln, judging from the base and glaze tone. Unusually, the surface of this vase was coated with yellow ochre with a brush, then covered with an ash glaze and fired in an oxidizing fire. The underlying ochre is black in color, and the ash glaze is brownish-green. The Kurozasa Kiln No. 35 is known for this technique of painting with ochre. This piece may be a product of the same kiln.
