Height: 8.2 cm, Mouth Diameter: 10.5–10.7 cm, Foot Diameter: 4.8 cm
On the underside of the inner box lid, Sekiō Fuzan of Kyōan has inscribed: “Black Tea Bowl by Chōnyū, ‘Toshiwasure’ (signature).” Since Chōnyū passed away in 1760 at the age of 57, this work was likely created during the youth of Fuzensai, who was 58 years old when he left this piece in 1801.
The style is based on Chōjirō-yaki tea bowls, with the rim drawn inward, the lower body slightly tapered, and the footring made small, low, and distinctly circular; a tomoe-patterned headband is carved into the footring. Shallow marks are visible from the base of the body around the footring; a small tea pool is carved into the center of the interior, and three marks remain on the footring’s base. The glaze applied over the entire piece is thick and well-fused, making this one of the finest examples among Chōnyū’s black tea bowls.
