Raku Museum
This Kusaya incense container features a roof-shaped lid coated in amber glaze, while the body is crafted in red Raku. Although this is a rare example of Dōnyū’s glazing technique, it demonstrates that the amber glaze later pioneered by Ōhi in Kanazawa was already being practiced by the Raku family during Dōnyū’s era; it is identical to the amber glaze applied to the “Niji” red tea bowl, inscribed “Niji,” by Dōnyū. Four feet extend from the four corners of the base, and the character “Raku” is clearly stamped in the center. On the underside of the inner box lid, Ryoryo-sai has inscribed “Nonkaku Kusuya Kogo-sa (seal).”
